Sport-Mad Britain!
Sport is absolutely huge in Britain — especially football, which you should never, ever call 'soccer' to a British person! The Premier League is watched all over the world, but our love for sport doesn't stop there. We also obsess over cricket in the summer, rugby in the winter, and tennis when Wimbledon is on. Almost every secondary school has a competitive sports day, and local towns are packed with grassroots clubs where anyone can play. Talking about the weekend's match is honestly one of the easiest ways to start a conversation with any British teenager.

Telling a Sports Story
Use the Past Continuous and Past Simple together to tell exciting stories about a match or a race. The Past Continuous sets the background scene, and the Past Simple describes the sudden action that interrupted it.

School Sports Day
In British secondary schools, the summer term means one thing: Sports Day! Students are divided into 'houses' and compete in athletics events to win points. It's not just serious running, though. You'll often see fun events like the egg-and-spoon race, the sack race, or the three-legged race. Even if you're not the best at sports, everyone covers themselves in face paint in their house colours and cheers from the sidelines. It's one of the best days of the school year.
