Read the Skeleton, Not Every Bone
Reading is the most substantial section of YDS and YÖKDİL, featuring several lengthy passages, multiple-choice questions, and tricky paragraph-completion items. Slow, word-by-word reading will inevitably ruin your timing, much like examining every brick while trying to navigate the London Underground map. Strong candidates read for structure: they identify the main idea, how each paragraph connects, and where the writer turns or concludes. Paragraph completion is essentially a cohesion puzzle. The correct sentence links seamlessly to the one before and the one after, using pronouns and connectors as glue.

Navigating YDS/YÖKDİL Reading Structures
Academic reading tests rely heavily on text cohesion. To master paragraph completion and reference questions, you must identify the 'glue' that binds sentences together.
The Cohesion Test
✓ Always check the sentence AFTER the gap in paragraph completion.
✓ Ensure 'they' or 'these' has a plural noun to refer back to.
✗ Don't just pick the sentence that sounds the most formal.

Slotting the Missing Sentence
Student: For paragraph completion, I usually just pick whichever sentence sounds nice.
Tutor: That's why you miss them. Look at the gap here — the sentence after it starts with 'These measures failed.'
Student: So the missing sentence must mention some measures?
Tutor: Exactly. 'These' has to point back to something specific. Which option introduces measures?
Student: Let me scan... Option C says, 'The government introduced several new taxes.'
Tutor: Spot on. Now check if the sentence before the gap fits too. Does it lead logically into taxes?
Student: Yes, it's talking about the national budget crisis. So Option C glues both sides together.
Tutor: That's the cohesion test in action. You must check both sides, every single time.
Student: It's less about reading and more like solving a mathematical puzzle, isn't it?
Tutor: Precisely. Find the reference words, find the connectors, and the answer reveals itself.
Skimming Like a Commuter
If you want to master the skimming technique required for YDS, observe a London commuter reading a broadsheet newspaper on a crowded Tube train. They don't have the time or space to read every single word. Instead, their eyes dart to the headlines, the first sentence of a paragraph, and any bold text. They grasp the main idea of an article about Parliament or the economy in mere seconds before turning the page. Adopt this exact mindset for the exam: read the first and last sentences of a paragraph carefully, and let your eyes glide over the supporting details in the middle.
