You Don't Need to Understand Everything
The cloze test (a short passage with five blanks) and sentence-completion questions together make up a substantial chunk of the YDS and YÖKDİL exams. Candidates often panic because the passages contain dense, academic vocabulary they don't recognise. Here is the secret: you don't actually need to understand every single word. Each blank is decided by the grammar and logic immediately surrounding it—be it a connector, a tense marker, a preposition, or a verb form. By training your eye to read the contextual clues beside the blank rather than deciphering the whole essay, you transform a daunting knowledge test into a manageable technique exercise.

The Logic Behind Every Blank
Most cloze and completion blanks fall into four distinct categories. Identify the type, and the answer narrows down instantly.

✓ Read the HALF you are given.
✓ Decide what kind of idea must follow (a reason? a contrast? a condition?).
✓ THEN scan the options and eliminate those that clash with the logic.

Talking Through a Blank
Student: This cloze passage is about marine biology — I don't know half the words.
Tutor: You don't have to. Look at blank three: 'The cells divide rapidly; ___, the tissue grows.'
Student: So the second part is a direct result of the first?
Tutor: Exactly. Which connector signals a result?
Student: I'd say 'therefore' or 'thus'.
Tutor: Spot on. You can completely ignore the biology and just follow the logic. Now, look at the next blank.
Student: It says 'by the end of the last century'. So it needs a past tense?
Tutor: Even better—it needs a past perfect tense because of 'by the end of'.
Student: Ah, so the answer is decided by the time phrase, not the topic itself.
Tutor: Precisely. Once you grasp this method, the distractors won't fool you.
The Psychology of "Closure"
Interestingly, the "cloze" test was invented in 1953 by W.L. Taylor, who named it after the psychological concept of "closure"—our brain's natural tendency to fill in missing pieces of a pattern. British universities often use similar tests to assess academic reading proficiency for international students. When you sit your YÖKDİL or YDS, you are essentially proving that your brain can spot structural patterns in English just as naturally as a native speaker would when reading a broadsheet newspaper like The Times or The Guardian.
