The English Interview
More and more Turkish professionals are interviewing in English — for international companies, remote roles, and jobs abroad. British interviews tend to be polite but direct: expect a friendly start with a bit of small talk about your journey or the weather, followed by a structured conversation about your experience. The good news is that interview questions are remarkably predictable. If you prepare for the common ones, you'll sound calm and professional, even if your English isn't perfect. Remember, they are looking for a colleague they can work well with, not a human dictionary.

The STAR Method: Past Tenses for Examples
When an interviewer says 'Tell me about a time when...', they want a real example. The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) uses past tenses to keep your story clear and concrete.

At the Interview
Interviewer: Thanks for coming in. So, tell me a little about yourself.
Candidate: Of course. I'm a marketing specialist with about five years' experience, and I'm currently responsible for managing social media campaigns.
Interviewer: Great. What would you say is your biggest strength?
Candidate: I'd say I'm a real team player. For example, when we were short-staffed last year, I took on extra projects to support my colleagues.
Interviewer: That's excellent. And what about a weakness?
Candidate: To be honest, I used to take on too much myself, but I've learnt to delegate and trust my team.
Interviewer: Good answer. Now, what is your current notice period?
Candidate: I'm currently on a one-month notice period, so I could start early next month.
Interviewer: Perfect. Do you have any questions for us?
Candidate: Yes — could you tell me what a typical day in this role looks like?
Interviewer: Absolutely. You'd be coordinating with our London office in the mornings, and focusing on local campaigns in the afternoon. We'll be in touch by the end of the week.
Candidate: Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you.
The 'Cup of Tea' Test
In Britain, the interview often starts before you even sit down. The receptionist, the walk to the meeting room, and the initial offer of a tea or coffee are all part of the process. Interviewers use small talk — usually about the weather or your journey to the office — to see how you interact socially. It's polite to accept a glass of water, and you should always prepare a brief, positive answer to 'Did you have any trouble finding us?'. Complaining about the Tube or the rain, even jokingly, isn't the best way to start!
