Finding a Home in Britain

Renting in Britain is a rite of passage for most adults, whether you're moving for work or study. The private rental market is huge, especially in bustling cities like London, Manchester, and Edinburgh. Estate agents manage most lettings, and to secure a property, you'll need references, a deposit, and proof of income. The market moves incredibly fast, so being prepared is essential. Understanding the specific language of British housing will help you secure a flat and communicate confidently with landlords and agents.

Flat Viewing

Agent: So this is the flat — it's a two-bed, fully furnished, available from the first of April. Elif: It's lovely. Are the bills included in the rent? Agent: Council tax and water are included, but you'd set up your own gas and electricity. Elif: I see. If we took the flat, would there be any flexibility on the price? We saw a similar one nearby for less. Agent: I can check with the landlord. If you're in a position to move quickly, he might consider £50 off. Elif: That would make a big difference. What's the notice period if we need to leave? Agent: One month, in writing. The deposit is five weeks' rent, protected in a government scheme. Elif: That's reassuring. Flatshares and Quirky British Homes

Renting a whole property can be expensive, so many young professionals choose a 'flatshare' (living in an HMO — House in Multiple Occupation). You rent a bedroom and share the kitchen and bathroom. Speaking of bathrooms, don't be surprised if you encounter some classic British quirks in older houses! You might find separate hot and cold taps instead of a single mixer tap, and historically, some homes even had carpets in the bathroom, though this is thankfully becoming rare today.
