Going out is where textbook English falls apart, because nobody in a real pub speaks the way a coursebook does. Today we do what people actually say — booking a table, ordering, splitting a bill, and getting out of plans politely, which is a genuinely useful skill in Britain.

The Great British Night Out

Going out in Britain revolves heavily around the pub — it is the social heart of many communities. Whether you are meeting colleagues after work or catching up with friends on a Friday night, the pub is usually the first stop. However, there are unwritten rules you need to know, such as buying drinks in 'rounds' and knowing how to order at the bar. Understanding these unspoken rules will help you feel completely at home in British social situations.

Making Suggestions — Shall, Why don't we, How about

British people often use indirect suggestions to be polite. Here are the three most common patterns for planning a night out.

The Pub Quiz Tradition

If you visit a British pub on a weekday evening, you might stumble into a 'pub quiz'. This is a beloved tradition where teams compete to answer trivia questions on topics ranging from history and geography to pop music. It usually costs a couple of pounds to enter, and the winning team gets a cash prize or a round of free drinks. It is a fantastic way to socialize, practise your English, and experience authentic local culture!

THE OLD FORGE — BOOKINGS We take bookings for two sittings: 6.30pm and 8.45pm. Tables are held for fifteen minutes after the booking time, after which we may release them. Groups of six or more are asked to choose from the set menu, and a discretionary service charge of 12.5% is added to bills for parties of eight or above. Please let us know about any dietary requirements when booking rather than on arrival — our kitchen is small and we cannot always accommodate changes on the night. We are unable to split bills across more than four cards.
