Indirect Questions for Politeness
British people often use indirect questions to sound more polite. This is crucial for sounding natural and respectful in the UK. Notice how the word order changes back to a normal statement structure.

An article on British indirectness
Visitors to Britain often describe the English as polite, but a more accurate word would be indirect. The politeness is real enough; what confuses people is that it operates through understatement rather than warmth. A colleague who says your proposal is 'interesting' may well mean they disagree with it. 'I might join you later' frequently means no. And 'not too bad', delivered about a holiday, a meal or a salary, generally means genuinely good — praising something directly can feel like boasting, so the enthusiasm is removed and the listener is trusted to put it back. None of this is dishonesty. It is a shared code, and the difficulty for a newcomer is not the vocabulary but the confidence to read it. The safest approach is to listen for what is missing: a British speaker who wants to say no will often say everything except the word.
