A Band 8 introduction and first body paragraph
It is frequently claimed that governments ought to direct more funding towards public transport than towards the construction of new roads. While additional roads can ease congestion in the short term, this essay will argue that investment in public transport represents the more sustainable choice. The primary reason for this is capacity. A single metro line is able to move far more people per hour than a motorway lane occupying comparable space, and it does so without the emissions associated with private vehicles. For instance, the M2 line in Istanbul carries several hundred thousand passengers each day — a volume that would require many additional lanes of road to accommodate. Building those lanes would consume land that a city of that density simply does not have.
