Task 1 is the most mechanical thing in the entire exam, and if your test is close, that is very good news. There is no opinion to have. No argument to build. It is four paragraphs, a fixed set of phrases, and one real skill — choosing what matters instead of listing everything you can see. Most candidates have never been told that last one is being marked. You are about to be.
- 1The four paragraphs, and which one earns the band
- 2Why an opinion costs you marks here
- 3Comparison language that reads as Band 7
- 4You write an overview, and I mark it

Structure, and the overview that earns the band
Four paragraphs, always. The second one is the one most candidates skip, and it is the one the band descriptors name directly.
Two rules that decide your band
✓ No opinion. No reasons. No recommendations
✓ No numbers in the overview — numbers belong in paragraphs 3 and 4
✗ Listing every single figure with no grouping
Selecting vs listing
Band 5 — listing: In 2010 it was 2.1. In 2011 it was 2.3. In 2012 it was 2.4… — Every number, no selection. This is the most common Task 1 failure.
Band 7 — selecting: Car journeys rose steadily across the decade, from 2.1 to 3.8 million. — One sentence, the whole trend, two anchor figures.

A Band 7 answer to a line-graph question
The graph illustrates how commuters in one British city travelled to work between 2010 and 2020, measured in millions of journeys per year. Overall, private car use grew considerably across the period, while bus travel declined. Cycling, which began as the least used option, showed the fastest proportional growth. Car journeys rose steadily from 2.1 million in 2010 to 3.8 million by 2020, making it the dominant mode throughout. Rail followed a similar upward path, climbing from 1.2 to 2.6 million, though it remained roughly a third below car use in every year measured. By contrast, bus journeys fell from 1.4 million to under 900,000, a decline of more than a third. Cycling rose only marginally in absolute terms, from 0.2 to 0.6 million, but this represented a threefold increase — the steepest relative rise of any mode.
