The Part Everyone Fears
In Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test, the examiner hands you a cue card with a topic and four bullet points. You receive exactly one minute to prepare, after which you must speak uninterrupted for one to two minutes. For many candidates, this is the most daunting segment of the exam, as holding the floor without prompts feels unnatural. However, this section is highly structured and entirely predictable. By mastering a few narrative techniques and signposting phrases, you can confidently deliver a cohesive speech that impresses any British examiner.

A Model Long Turn
Examiner: I'd like you to describe a journey that was memorable for you. You have one minute to prepare.
Candidate: (after one minute) Right, I'd like to talk about a road trip I took along the south coast of Turkey a few years ago.
Candidate: Let me set the scene — it was the middle of summer, and a couple of friends and I had decided to drive from Antalya to Fethiye.
Candidate: We set off early in the morning, and the views were stunning — the sea was on one side and the mountains on the other.
Candidate: The reason it was so memorable is that our car broke down halfway, and we ended up staying overnight in a tiny village we'd never heard of.
Candidate: The locals were incredibly kind; they invited us for dinner even though we were complete strangers.
Candidate: Looking back, it was the unexpected part that made it special. All in all, it's a journey I'll never forget.
Examiner: Thank you. And do you still keep in touch with the people you met?
Candidate: Actually, yes! We occasionally exchange messages on social media, which makes the memory even fonder.
The Examiner's Poker Face
When you are delivering your two-minute monologue, do not expect the examiner to smile, nod, or encourage you. British testing standards require examiners to maintain a completely neutral expression to ensure fairness across all candidates. This "poker face" can feel intimidating, making you think you are doing poorly. Don't panic! They are simply concentrating hard on assessing your fluency, vocabulary, and grammatical range. Keep talking until they stop you.
