Why Vocabulary Wins Marks
'Lexical Resource' is one of the four key criteria you are scored on in IELTS Speaking, and it is arguably one of the most straightforward to improve. Examiners listen carefully for two things: precise vocabulary instead of vague terms ('exhausted' rather than 'very tired'), and natural collocations—words that British speakers instinctively pair together, like 'heavy rain' instead of 'strong rain'. The trick is balance. A few well-placed, higher-level words sound highly impressive, but cramming in 'fancy' vocabulary that you cannot use accurately does more harm than good. Ultimately, precision always beats mere decoration.

Collocations: Words That Belong Together
A collocation is a pair or group of words that English speakers naturally use together. Using the wrong partner might be grammatically 'correct' but sounds highly unnatural—and costs you marks in IELTS.

Upgrading in Real Time
Examiner: Good afternoon. Let's talk about your weekends. How do you usually spend your time off?
Candidate: Well, I'm very fond of the outdoors, so I spend a great deal of my free time hiking in the Peak District.
Examiner: And why do you enjoy that particular activity?
Candidate: I find nature absolutely fascinating, and being active is crucial for clearing my head after a busy week at the office.
Examiner: Is there anything you'd like to do more of in the future?
Candidate: I'd love to travel more extensively. I really think it broadens your horizons and helps you make better decisions about life.
Examiner: Do you generally prefer the city or the countryside?
Candidate: The countryside, definitely. The city can be thoroughly exhausting to live in, especially with all the heavy traffic.
Examiner: Have you always felt this way about city life?
Candidate: Mostly, yes. The constant noise requires a great deal of patience, which I don't always possess!
The Art of British Understatement
When upgrading your vocabulary for a Band 7, it is worth noting the British cultural love of understatement. While you should use precise words, avoid becoming overly melodramatic. Instead of saying 'I was infinitely devastated by the rain,' a British speaker might say, 'The heavy rain was rather a nuisance.' Using adverbs like 'rather', 'quite', or 'absolutely' with your new adjectives (e.g., 'absolutely fascinating' instead of just 'fascinating') sounds incredibly natural and effortlessly boosts your Lexical Resource score.

Band 7 için kelime dağarcığınızı geliştirirken, İngilizlerin abartıdan kaçınma (understatement) sevgisini dikkate almakta fayda var. Kesin kelimeler kullanmanız gerekse de, aşırı melodramatik olmaktan kaçının. Bir İngiliz, 'Yağmurdan sonsuz derecede mahvoldum' demek yerine, 'Şiddetli yağmur epey can sıkıcıydı' diyebilir. Yeni sıfatlarınızla 'rather', 'quite' veya 'absolutely' gibi zarfları kullanmak (örneğin sadece 'büyüleyici' yerine 'kesinlikle büyüleyici' demek) kulağa inanılmaz derecede doğal gelir ve Sözcük Dağarcığı puanınızı zahmetsizce artırır.
