Range AND Accuracy
Examiners score your grammar on two things: range (do you use a variety of structures?) and accuracy (are they correct?). Many candidates speak in safe, short sentences — all correct, but all simple — and get stuck at Band 6. To push higher, you need to mix in complex sentences like relative clauses, conditionals, and a range of tenses. Interestingly, mastering these structures also helps you sound more naturally British, as we frequently use conditionals and modal verbs to sound polite or indirect. However, there's a delicate balance: a complex sentence riddled with errors can score lower than a simple, accurate one. Aim for variety you can confidently control.

Relative Clauses & Conditionals
Two complex structures that instantly raise your grammatical range are relative clauses (which add extra detail) and conditionals (which discuss possibilities). Mixing ONE complex sentence into every few answers is all it takes to show range.

Examiner: Tell me about where you live.
Candidate: I live in Izmir, which is a coastal city in the west of Turkey. Even though it's quite big, it has a relaxed feel.
Examiner: Would you ever move somewhere else?
Candidate: Possibly. If I had the chance, I would live abroad for a year — as long as I could come back home afterwards. I wouldn't want to leave permanently.
Examiner: Has the city changed much since you were a child?
Candidate: Yes, a lot. By the time I finished university, the whole seafront had already been rebuilt. It's much more modern now.
Examiner: Do you and your family have similar tastes in where to go?
Candidate: Not really. I love the busy centre, whereas my parents tend to prefer the quiet suburbs. They think the city is far too noisy.
Examiner: What would make your city a better place to live?
Candidate: If the local council invested more in public transport, the traffic wouldn't be such a nightmare.
The British Love of Hedging
In the UK, mastering complex grammar isn't just about passing an exam; it's central to how British people interact. We are famous for our 'hedging' — using conditionals and modal verbs to soften our opinions and avoid sounding too direct. Instead of saying 'That's a bad idea,' a British person might say, 'If we did that, it might cause a few issues.' Using these structures in your IELTS test not only ticks the box for grammatical range but also shows the examiner that you truly understand the nuances of spoken English.
