The NHS — Britain's Free Healthcare
The NHS (National Health Service) is Britain's free healthcare system — one of the things British people are most proud of.
To see a doctor, you register with a local GP (General Practitioner). GP appointments are free. Prescriptions usually cost a fixed fee of around £9.90 per item (or are free for children, people over 60, and those on certain benefits).
For minor problems (a cold, a cough, a small cut), you can often go to a pharmacy first — the pharmacist can give advice and sell many medicines without a prescription.
In an emergency (chest pain, serious injury, someone not breathing), call 999 (nine-nine-nine). For non-emergency medical advice, call 111 (one-one-one) — free, 24 hours a day.

Describing Symptoms & Polite Requests
Two useful patterns for the doctor's surgery:
——— 1) How long? — I've had … for / since … ———
Use present perfect + for (period of time) or since (starting point):
• I've had a sore throat for four days.
• I've had a headache since Monday.
• I've felt dizzy for about two hours.
(for = süre: for three days / for a week)
(since = başlangıç: since Monday / since yesterday)
——— 2) Polite requests — Could I …? / I'd like to … ———
British English is often very polite on the phone:
• Could I make an appointment, please?
• I'd like to see a GP today, please.
• Could I speak to a receptionist, please?
——— Also useful: I have / I feel ———
👉 I have a + [symptom]
• I have a headache.
• I have a sore throat.
• I have a high temperature.
👉 I feel + [adjective]
• I feel dizzy.
• I feel very tired.
• I don't feel well at all.
Important: Say "I don't feel well" — not "I don't feel good". British doctors like clear, precise language. 🏥
(Türkçe ipucu: "I've had X for Y days" = "Y gündür X'im var." Randevu isterken "Could I … please?" çok doğal ve kibar.)
